Ladies and Gentlemen,
Several of you have inquired about the interview Charlie Rose conducted with Major Winters several years ago. Others have asked how I first met Major Winters.
Rose asked Stephen Ambrose where he would most liked to have served had he been of military age in World War II. Ambrose responded, "As a paratrooper in Easy Company, 506th PIR, because the commander of that company was so good." When Rose pushed Ambrose by saying that surely there were other commanders who were certainly the equal of Winters, Ambrose mentioned Captain Joe Dawson of the 1st Infantry Division. I have included a chapter on Dawson and Winters, including my initial meetings with each, in Old Glory Stories. Hope this explanation answers your questions.
