This is my wife's grandfather , he won the Military Medal in France , he was also at Gallipoli , Anzac Cove 1915. He was a stretcher bearer. He saw many horrors on the battlefield.
My wife told me that he carrying a wounded soldier on a stretcher at the front and a shell exploded and the shrapnel cut to pieces his mate who was on the back of the stretcher and killed him outright.
They also had to shoot their horses before returning to Australia , they couldn't bring them back. That must have been terrible.
He was Private James Rudolph Sadler He was in the 45th Battalion AIF
