Remembering a Great Man

Postby ckingseed on 10 Jan 2011 08:21

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I know it is difficult to come to grips with the passing of Major Dick Winters this past week. When I lost my father, himself a veteran of Pearl Harbor and the war in the Pacific, last year, I was told, "You never get over his death, but you learn to live with it." Such is the case with Major Winters. Next to Dad, Dick Winters was the greatest man I have ever met. He was not only my friend, he was my best friend. I did not look upon him as a father-figure, but as a brother. I take great consolation in knowing that he is in a better place and that he is reunited with his wartime comrades. For a soldier, that is the greatest reward. Take solace in knowing how the Major touched our lives. We have been blessed that he crossed our paths and touched our lives.

Very well said!

I lost my 94 year old grandmother in October, 2010. She was a wonderful person and missed by all. I too know that she is in a better place sitting beside my grandfather who passed away 42 years ago. I still miss her to this day.

Thank you for all your work with the Major over the years. It has been a pleasure reading.

God bless you and the Major. :salute:

I assure you, the honor and privilege of working with the forum have been all mine. Mrs. Winters will schedule a memorial service to honor Major Winters within the next two months. Once she decides a date, I will notify the forum.

When I picture Major Winters now, this is exactly how I picture him; with his Brothers in Arms! :tinhat9

Colonel,

As stated in previous posts, Thank You so much for your kind words and your many updates on the health and well-being of Major Winters. I thank you again for the book you and the Major shared with the world. I'm very appreciative and honored to have a copy of it. It's definitely one of my many treasures.

Sincerely,

Chris~

Much obliged, Colonel. I just re-read Beyond Band of Brothers twice during December.... Still shocked the Major has made his last jump.

Currahee!

Colonel,

I just wanted to echo the thoughts of many who have already posted in this thread - thank you for bridging the gap between the forum and the Major. We are all in your debt for that.

Cheers,

Colonel,

Thank you for giving people a glimpse into the story of a great and humble man. Your contribution is so very important, because now, living memory of the war is now passing into the realm of history, and you have played a very imortant role in keeping the story straight.

You exaggerate my contribution, my friend. I was only privileged to help the Major tell his story. The fact that he considered me a friend means more to me than I can say.

The Major was an excellent judge of character. He chose the right people to tell his story.

You are very kind. I will always cherish the memories of sitting in his study, sharing memories. When I presented copy number one of his memoirs to him in 2006, Major Winters smiled and later inscribed my copy, "Your sharing my stories will live forever." That is my reward.
