Charlie Rose and Dick Winters

Postby ckingseed on 19 Aug 2007 09:34

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Several of you have inquired about the interview Charlie Rose conducted with Major Winters several years ago. Others have asked how I first met Major Winters.
Rose asked Stephen Ambrose where he would most liked to have served had he been of military age in World War II. Ambrose responded, "As a paratrooper in Easy Company, 506th PIR, because the commander of that company was so good." When Rose pushed Ambrose by saying that surely there were other commanders who were certainly the equal of Winters, Ambrose mentioned Captain Joe Dawson of the 1st Infantry Division. I have included a chapter on Dawson and Winters, including my initial meetings with each, in Old Glory Stories. Hope this explanation answers your questions.

I have got to answer those guys because I wear bars.
I've got the responsabily and I don't know whether I am big enough for the job. But I can't break it now.

-Captain Joe Dawson.

Thank you for your book, Cole.

Thanks, Dutchman. Having had the opportunity to spend so much time with Dick Winters and Joe Dawson was an incredible opportunity. Both officers took immense pride about commanding soldiers in combat. I've walked Dawson's route from Omaha Beach to Colleville many times and an still amazed how he was able to get his company off that beach. Same is true about Dick Winters at Brecourt Manor. The last thing Dawson said to me was, "Rank has its privileges, but it also has its responsibilities." Dick Winters has repeatedly said the same thing to me. I cherish the memories of these great commanders.

Hi Cole,
You are indeed one lucky guy and recently I took the oportunity to re read slowly both your books on these two great Americans. Not alone was their bravery outstanding, their combat leadership awesome but they came across as two damn nice guys. Their humanity in the face of of the worst kind of nightmare is a lesson not to be forgotten. I've been to Omaha Beach and one does wonder how they got up that hill. One other thing that got me while I was there was the level of casualities given the amount of ordinance flying around. One would have thought it should have been higher. Thankfully that was not the case.
Bye for now,
John.

Hi Colonel,

First off I would like to say that I just purchased your book on Major Winters. It looks fantastic. I would also like to know if you could lead me in the right direction on some videos I am trying to locate. The first is the documentary "In His Own Words", produced by Brian Kreider. This is a documentary on Major Winters and it seems that it is very difficult to get a copy. I am also trying to find a copy of the interview you wrote about earlier in this post. You wrote that Chalie Rose once interviewed Major Winters and I would love to see that interview. I have searched everywhere but I can't seem to locate any mention of this interview anywhere but here. Also, if you know of any other videos or audio interviews of Major Winters please let me know where I can get them. Obviously I am a big fan and I really love to see him speak during interviews. BTW, are any of his West Point lectures available on audio or video? Please let me know. Last question, during the memorial service at the Hershey Theatre, Erik Jendresen mentions a story where he meets Major Winters for the first time and the first thing Major Winters talks about is a mistake that Ambrose made in the BOB book regarding Shifty Powers. Unfortunately, Mr. Jendressen does not go into detail about what that mistake was. Can you tell me any further information about what the mistake was that Major Winters was refering to? Thanks in advance for your help.

The video In His Own Words was not released for public dissemination. With respect to Charlie Rose, you would have to go to the respective studio. Not sure if you can review it on you tube. Not really sure what Erik was referring to except that Ambrose did not give Powers sufficient credit in the Major's opinion. Not sure how much this helps. Hope that you enjoy the Major's book.

Colonel,

Thanks for the reply. Any idea who I could contact that might be able to make me a copy of "In His Own Words" ? I heard parts of it through the Derby/Hershey Historical society and it sounds fascinating. Have you seen this documentary? Thanks.

I have a personal copy given to me by Major Winters, but as I said, it was not distributed to the public.
