On his way home, around 3.00 AM on May 8, 2008, Sterchele was driving in his Porsche on the N49 between Antwerp and Knokke with in-excessive speed. For reasons currently unknown, Sterchele made a sudden move to the right. He drove into a ditch and his car was then thrown against a tree and then landed in a cornfield. No other cars were involved in the accident.
François Sterchele dies at the age of 26.
