Auburn soldier's WWII experience became Bastogne legend

Postby Linda on 06 Jan 2011 10:32

WW2 Airborne veteran Vince Speranza became the friend of many during his visits to Bastogne in December 2009 and recently in 2010...now after 66 years, his "beer story" finally makes it to the local press at home :tinhat34

Auburn soldier's WWII experience became Bastogne legend

Auburn resident and World War II Army veteran Vince Speranza, 85, shows off bottles of Airborne beer from Bastogne in Belgium in his home on Wednesday. In 1944, during the Battle of the Bulge, Speranza came to the aid of a wounded buddy by bringing him beer in his Army helmet he found in a bombed-out Bastogne tavern. Speranza only found out about his deed being commemorated as a specially brewed dark beer when he visited Bastogne for the 65th Anniversary of the battle in 2009.
